A robot is typically an electromechanical machine which is told what to do by computer and electronic programming. There is general agreement among experts, and the public, that robots tend to do some or all of the following:  115
move around
operate a mechanical limb
sense and manipulate their environment
and exhibit intelligent behavior


A robot uses sensors to gain information about the environment around it, and it uses actuators to phsically manipulate itself and its external environment. A robot cannot understand what it is sensing in the traditional way that humans do, it can only understand in the way that a computer program can get information and make useful decisions as a result. What we think of as robot intelligence is simply the ability to make decisions based on a large number of variables, some of which may be very complex.
